Sewing Skill Levels
Skill Levels will help you decide which class is best suited for you. The levels are designed to be progressive and build your sewing skills. For example, if you are choosing a level 5 class, you will need to complete classes at a lower level or have the knowledge listed under those lower levels to ensure you get the most out of it.
SKILL LEVEL 1 - NO SEWING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Level 1 Classes are designed for the absolute beginner. You may have no sewing experience or have not sewn for a very long time, and you have probably never used a sewing machine.
SKILL LEVEL 2 - ADVANCED BEGINNER
Level 2 Classes are designed for stitchers who have basic sewing experience and have practiced within the last year. You know how to use and thread a sewing machine and bobbin on your own. You know how to sew a simple seam and are familiar with terminology such as “right sides together” and “seam allowance.” If you have previously taken a workshop with Made Stitch Co, you will be ready for this level.
SKILL LEVEL 3 - BEGINNER DRESSMAKER
Level 3 Classes are designed for stitchers who are confident using a sewing machine and have practiced in the last six months. You can complete a simple project, such as a pillowcase or tote bag, without difficulty. You are ready to begin sewing clothing but unsure how to get started. You have never sewn a garment using a commercial pattern.
SKILL LEVEL 4 - ADVANCED BEGINNER DRESSMAKER
Level 4 Classes are designed for stitchers who have made simple garments in the past six months, such as those in a Level 3 Class. You are familiar with how to use a sewing pattern, how to measure yourself and pick a size, and you are looking to learn a new technique.
SKILL LEVEL 5 - INTERMEDIATE DRESSMAKER
Level 5 Classes are designed for stitchers who can sew simple dressmaking projects without difficulty. You can follow a sewing pattern unaided, and you want to learn a more advanced technique, how to sew with a trickier fabric. You don’t have experience fitting or altering patterns, but you are ready to learn.
SKILL LEVEL 6 - ADVANCED DRESSMAKER
Level 6 Classes are designed for confident stitchers who have made many garments using commercial patterns. You are comfortable with using trickier fabrics. You have some experience with fitting and making minor alterations to patterns.
